Volunteer and Staff Orientation - July 26

Orientation for new and returning staff will be held on July 26th, 10am - 1pm at Seaside Elementary School in Torrance.  You will receive your camp tee shirt and valuable information about Camp Escapades and the children you will be supporting.  We have made many changes this year so it is important that returning staff and volunteers also attend.

Parent Orientation for Campers - July 23rd, 7:00pm

An orientation meeting for all parents of campers who have a confirmed spot at camp will be held at Pediatric Therapy Network on July 23rd at 7:00 pm.  The purpose of this meeting is to provide general camp information, pick up t-shirts, fill out any missing paper work, and answer any remaining questions. You will be meeting in small groups with your child’s group leader. This meeting will prepare you and your child for a fun-filled and safe summer camp experience.  Click on the information below and bring with you to orientation.

What to Bring to Camp

Will my child be receiving therapy at camp?

Although each camp group is led by a therapist, the focus of camp is not treatment. The focus of camp is for children to have a camp experience, not to focus on treatment goals. Leaders will be there to facilitate a child’s participation, modifying or adapting the situation/activity as needed.

Tell me more about being a camper?

  • This will be Camp Escapades 11th year.
  • Four-year-old campers attend for half day from 9am to 12pm. Campers ages 5 -13 attend from 9am to 3pm.
  • Selection of campers to participate will be made by the camp coordinators.  Parents may request that their camper attend for one, two, or three weeks of camp.  However, in order to service as many children as possible, we may not be able to schedule a child for all three weeks.  Current and past PTN clients are given priority.  Parents will be notified of acceptance by the end of June.
  • There are regular rotations during the day to include art and craft activities, sports, sensory motor activities, water play, special events (at least one per week), social interaction, and music.
  • Children are assigned a camp group by age.  Last year, we had thirteen camp groups.  Some groups had a mixture of children with special needs, as well as typically developing siblings and friends.  Often parents who send their children who have special needs to Camp Escapades also send the children's siblings along as well.
  • Each group is led by a therapist and includes a co-leader, two counselors, counselors-in-training, and many volunteers.

How do I pay for camp?

Contact your case-worker at the regional center and let them know you are interested in attending Camp Escapades.  You may also pay privately.  Regional Center usually considers camp as a respite opportunity so parents are encouraged to discuss their interest in camp as a regional center service for their child.  For those parents with a co-pay or are paying privatley, on-line payments will be available on June 15th or you can pay by check or credit card at the parent orientation meeting.

What skills do I need to know to be a volunteer?

We will offer a training session for all volunteers.  Here are some training documents from our 2007 volunteer training.  Our volunteer training will be on July 26th.  Check back on the website for time and location.
