Tell me more about camp

  • Camp is held the first three weeks in August at Seaside Elementary School in Torrance.

  • Campers range in age from 3 to 13. Our four year old campers attend half day sessions from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Our campers 5 to 13 years of age attend full-day sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

  • Parents may request that their camper attend for one, two, or three weeks of camp. However, in order to provide our program for as many children as possible, we may not be able to schedule a child for all three weeks. Selection of campers to participate will be made by PTN's camp coordinators. Current and past PTN clients are given first priority. Parents will be notified of their child's acceptance to the program no later than the end of May.

  • There is a steady rotation of fun and creative activities including arts and crafts, sports, dance, games, water play, special events (at least one per week), social interaction, and music.

  • Children are assigned to a camp group like Golden Guppies or Red Robins that coincides with their age. Last year, we had 13 camp groups. Groups are often inclusive as children with special needs, as well as typically developing siblings and friends participate in activities together. Many parents who send their children who have special needs to Camp Escapades also send the child's siblings along as well for a positive camp experience the children can enjoy together.

  • Each group is led by a trained therapist and includes a co-leader, two counselors, counselors-in-training, and many youth volunteers.

What weeks will camp be offered this year?
Camp Escapades is typically scheduled for the first three weeks of August.

Can I register for camp online?
On-line registration will be available in April for Camp Escapades 2010.

Is my child eligible to attend camp?
To make camp a fun and safe experience for your child and other campers, your child must be able to do the following without showing agressive or unsafe behaviors. Please note that camp coordination team reserves the right to request that a family member or 1:1 assistant remains with the child if he or she is unable to meet the below criteria:

  • Participate in group activities and stay in a group without running away
  • Attend to activities for at least 10 to 15 minutes and transition from one activity to the next with minimal assistance
  • Children in wheelchairs and with physical disabilities are welcome at camp
  • One on one assistant or family member must accompany the child if their are specific needs in the areas of feeding, medication, bathroom use or mobility.
  • As we are a specialized camp, Regional Centers do not provide 1:1 assistants

Will my child be receiving therapy at Camp Escapades?
Although each camp group is led by a therapist, the focus of camp is not treatment. Camp Escapades' objective is for children of all abilities to enjoy a camp experience as opposed to meeting treatment goals. Leaders will be present at all times to facilitate a child's participation, modifying or adapting the situation/activity as needed.

How do I pay for camp?
Families usually pay for camp through Regional Center or pay privately. Please contact your case-worker at the regional center and let them know you are interested in attending Camp Escapades. Regional Center usually considers camp as a respite opportunity so parents are encouraged to discuss their interest in camp as a regional center service for their child. While we welcome 3 year old children, please note that the Regional Center does not fund for children under 4.

    Where is camp located?

    Is there a parent orientation?
Yes, a parent orientation meeting will be held at Pediatric Therapy Network's clinic a few weeks before camp for all parents of confirmed campers. The purpose of this meeting is to provide general camp information, pick up your camper(s) t-shirts, complete any outstanding paper work and answer your questions. Parents will be meeting in small groups with your child's group leader. This meeting will prepare you and your child for a fun-filled and safe summer camp experience. Click on the information below and bring the documents with you to orientation.
